NEWLY FORMED NANTAHALA HEALTH FOUNDATION TO FOCUS ON IMPROVED COMMUNITY HEALTH IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA

Six-county Region to Benefit From Investments in Local Nonprofit Partnerships to Improve Education, Economic Stability, Healthcare, Environment and Social and Community Context

FRANKLIN, N.C. – The Nantahala Health Foundation (NHF), a newly formed, public 501©3 organization, is looking forward to collaborating with local nonprofits to improve the health and wellness of those that live in the six-county, westernmost region of North Carolina, which includes Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, Swain counties and the Qualla Boundary.

“This is an important and exciting time for the residents of western North Carolina,” said NHF Board Chair, Jane Kimsey. “We have an amazing opportunity to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our communities, today and for generations to come. We look forward to partnering with the nonprofits and community leaders who are already doing great work in our region.”

The NHF Board of Directors has two priorities in its inaugural year:

1. Understanding and identifying the issues that challenge our communities and create health disparities.

2. Through a grassroots approach, creating a better understanding of the inner workings of existing nonprofits in the region, investing in their strategies through capacity building, and supporting their initiatives that address the root causes of the health inequalities in our six-county region.

As it seeks to better understand the needs and opportunities of the counties it serves, the Nantahala Health Foundation will be seeking community input through meetings, surveys and interviews throughout 2019. The organization will launch a website soon where interested parties will be able to learn more about the Foundation, ask questions and submit requests for funding. Until that site is launched, a platform to field general questions can be found at www.nantahalahealthfoundation.org. With regards to specific questions, please send email inquiries to info@nantahalahealthfoundation.org.

About Nantahala Health Foundation

Evolving out of the sale of Mission Health System to HCA, the Nantahala Health Foundation, a public 501©3 charity, was created as a successor foundation to guarantee the continued efforts of improving the health, wellness and lives of those that live in the six-county, westernmost region of North Carolina. In collaboration with the Dogwood Health Trust, the NHF will focus on building partnerships with existing innovative nonprofits who focus on the five targeted areas of social determinants of health, to improve the health and well-being of all people in the communities they serve.
