Clay County Community for Students

Clay County Government Logo

Total Grant Funding: $33,828
Grant Cycle: NIMble 2020, CHIP 2020
Priority Area: Education

To purchase an HVAC system to be installed at the Community Service Center to support afterschool options for underserved students (NIMble) and to address needs related to education, economic stability and health as they relate to community well-being in light of COVID-19 safety measures, specifically to create safe spaces during the 2021 spring school semester that will provide reliable internet, supervision, assignment assistance, nutritious meals and social interaction (CHIP).

Grant Impact: “When we began this process (2020 CHIP application), we couldn’t fully understand the great need that would be met through these sites, for example, Lydia (named changed) came to us with significant social distress due to long-term quarantine and school closings. She was an excellent 8th-grade student, but the stress and limited socialization caused by at-home learning left her mother concerned. Lydia’s mother shared that her daughter had become so subdued that she practically hid behind her when they went out in public. She brought Lydia to New Life in hopes of regaining that bubbly, outgoing young lady she had always been. When Lydia left us, she was ready to venture out and socialize with others!”

Grant Impact: Getting this (2020 NIMble) grant to purchase the HVAC system had a major impact on the Hayesville Yellow Jacket Air Rifle Team, which was developed to provide an outlet for students who might not be able to participate in other sports activities. Because it is an indoor activity, it can be a year-round sport with the appropriate environmental controls. We began the program without heating and air conditioning. This took a toll on both our coaches and students. Several students have health conditions that limited their time in the program. We wanted to be able to serve all students. Coaches have also been affected by environmental conditions. One of the coaches had to actually quit the program because the lack of air circulation made the environmental conditions hazardous to his health. Since we need all our coaches to be able to adequately coach and supervise the students, this severely limited the time coaches can spend with students. The new HVAC system has been a game-changer for the program.

Our seniors have already been utilizing the facility for yoga, knitting, woodworking and other activities. Our painting classes have also resumed. Additionally, the Senior Center has been the site for free-tax preparation, a valuable service that saves our seniors and other qualifying individuals from $75 – $500 per person, allowing them to use the money saved for other needful items.
